Tenerife, in the Canary Islands

Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz as it is known in one of the more traditional towns on the island. Here you can enjoy tapas and other local dishes including excellent, fresh fish, gorgeous island stews and fried pork with chick peas. There is even a local wine made from grapes grown at the base of a volcano. The island is dominated by this magnificent, snow-capped volcano called Mount Teide. At 3,700m high it is Spain's highest peak!

One of the best times to visit the island is around the beginning of Lent (normally mid-February) when the carnivals begin. The island explodes into a riot of parades, feathers and sequins and the biggest and best carnivals are found in Santa Cruz.

Aside from the fabulous nightlife and grand fiestas there is plenty of sporting activities to be done. With powerful waves hitting the beaches and coast of this volcanic island all year round, it’s a magical place for surfers.
