The past week has offered continuous snowfalls over the Chamonix valley and there is another 99 cm :-) forcasted until Friday! Last weekend the Grand Montets ski area partially opened and judging from the smile on everyone’s faces, the skiing was really good!

Dès 18h, les premières fenêtres s’allument, et à 20h, la ville entière est illuminée.

 

Une grande partie de la population descend dans la rue, joyeuse et attendrie, s’étonnant de ce geste spontané et communicatif.

The rest played it safe and ordered something less cheesy.

Retreat #2 Surf/Climb/Yoga in Portugal This one will be somewhat more open in terms of daily activities, but more focused on the retreat aspect. Breakfast and dinner will be provided (lots of delicious fresh fruit and fish/veggie bbq's etc). We'll have a big house by the beach with a private swimming pool, garden etc; Morning and Evening Yoga and Meditation sessions. Thai massage swaps and optional Pilates classes, and a driver to take you wherever you want to go surfing or climbing (the craig's aren't amazing but the deep-water soloing is phenomenal). The house is situated in Western Algarve, between Lagos and Luz, and from the nearest beach (5min away) there is great fishing, sailing, windsurfing as well as cliff walks and hikes with spectacular views. We will have all activities/equipment rentals etc sussed so that it will be easy to go from your tasty post-yoga breakfast to your chosen activity. In case of bad weather I can run extra pilates classes and AcroYoga workshops included in the cost:

Un avion, un accident, le glacier des Bossons, mais aussi : un film !

Nos jeunes étudiants américains sont allés interroger les charmantes dames de l'office de tourisme de Cham sur ce fameux accident.
Réponses obtenues, ils ont travaillé sur l'affiche et sur un extrait du film.
Après la classe, ils ont aménagé la grande salle et s'y sont installés pour la projection. Morceau de pizza dans les mains, ils étaient fins prêts pour en découvrir un peu plus sur cet avion.
Le lendemain, surprise!
Les professeurs avaient organisé, en complicité avec leurs leaders-animateurs, une visite au glacier des Bossons, le lieu de l'accident où on peut découvrir deux morceaux de l'engin de 1950. Cette fois, c'est stylo et cahier en main qu'ils en ont appris davantage sur cet évènement et sur le glacier "impressionnant".

From the moment a friend led her up the Lac Blanc path ten years ago she was hooked. In her own words: "the amount of accessible walking trails and routes within the Mont Blanc range is truly astounding.  Plus, with the network of cable cars and chairlifts available, people of all ages and ability can experience the joys of high altitude mountain walking, without the need for ropes, crampons or an ice axe!"

Question : Insted Chamonix takes a unique approach to language learning - combining language learning with a lifestyle incorporating active sports such as skiing or surfing in inspiring locations throughout Europe, including their headquarters in the heart of European skiing "Chamonix".  You are here at Insted as a professional massage therapist leading a training session for massage therapists in the Chamonix Valley - can you describe the major benefits of having access to this space in Chamonix and the importance of reaching out to other professionals to continue/update their training?

 

Answer :

Ruth: Most Chamonix locals know where Insted is, and it's easy to find and central with parking nearby. The weblinks to directions on the Insted page help a lot too - so instantly the great location is time-saving and easy for me and the participating therapists.
More importantly, it's great to have a bright, airy space with good teaching facilities - whiteboard/ projector as well as plenty of toilets and kitchen facilities, not to mention great views! It meant we all could get on with the training and learning in a comfortable, inviting environment.

We plan to continue to arrange periodical massage courses and really hope to encourage massage practitioners from around Europe to join us in such a stunning location and combine their massage training with the amazing mountain sports out here.

Mel:
The working environment was excellent and spacious for the size of group we had. It seems like there are many highly experienced quality massage
therapists in Chamonix and it was a pleasure to share my massage training with them. I look forward to returning.

 

Question : What are the core objectives of the training facility you are offering to the massage therapists taking your course?

 

Ruth: We are offering a Sports Massage Masterclass for massage therapists based in Chamonix and beyond... Really because I wanted to have access to such a facility on my doorstep so I assumed plenty of other masseuses would to!

Mel: I suppose the objective is to share the massage skills I've developed
through the London School of Sports Massage with the Chamonix community.  Ruth invited me out here and I loved the idea of combining some work with this stunning high mountain location.

 

Question : As a massage therapist, what would you say is the single most important opportunity you have identified in a training environment like this?

 

Ruth: It's been great to get to know a bunch of other massage therapists and share our skills and ideas. Everyone seemed to inspire and be inspired by each other.

Mel: It's just great to get a group of enthusiastic learners in a good
classroom and watch everyone develop - often in their own way!

Une projection en grand format d'une sélection de photos. J'ai délibérément choisi d'orienter cette série projetée sur une femme à l'aurore de sa vie: ma mère.

 

Laure et sa photographie… :

 

C'est mon goût particulier pour l'écriture documentaire qui anime ma raison, c'est un voyage de tous les jours, une manière de voir et de donner à voir.

Lauréate d'une bourse pour ma première expo, je n'ai plus arrêté de penser et de réaliser des projets autour de l'image. J'ai eu la chance de présenter mon travail en France et à l'étranger, dans différents lieux (cinéma d'art et essai, théâtre, école, bar, galerie, Maison d'Europe et d'Orient, Centre Culturel Français…), ce à l'occasion de différents évènements comme la Nuit des Musées 2008.

J'anime également des ateliers d'initiation photo. Je le fais quand je suis à l'étranger principalement, ou, en lien avec mes cours de français parallèlement à mon enseignement.

Fri, 02 Apr 2010 09:53:09 +0000 http://www.insted.com/posts/show/35/en Meet student Davide De Masi who is attending a 15 week French intensive semester course at Insted this winter and combines it with his passion for skiing, climbing and photography.

Davide was born in 1985 in Chicago, but moved to Utah when he was 12. He went to the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and Bellingham, and explored the incredible natural setting of the American Northwest. It was here he expanded his photography and skills as a climber and skier.

 

Davide spent last year in Val d’Isere and says he is extremely attracted to the beauty and culture of the alps. He thinks that the European attitude for the mountains is much more liberal than that of the Americans and that especially Chamonix has the most incredible access to the most amazing mountains he has had a chance to ski in.

With an Italian father he did not have to travel to France with a student visa. Instead, he is lucky to hold an Italian passport and can travel freely all over Europe. Davide came to Insted and Chamonix in January this year and is, beside his French studies,  shooting and competing in various competitions for the Nissan Freeride World Tour.

 

Why Insted and Chamonix, Davide?

I chose Chamonix for several reasons. One being it is actually a town. Last year I lived in a small ski village that was very isolated. I feel Chamonix is very international and yet it retains a small-town feel. It has a lot to offer for such a small town, yet it still rests in one of the most beautiful natural sites in the world with phenomenal ski lift infrastructure and a lot to offer off the slopes. There is simply no where else that I know that offers a mix of lifestyle and culture as well as incredible access and infrastructure in the mountains.

I decided to study French in order to prepare for a Master’s program that I am planning on attending in Switzerland this fall. I felt Chamonix offered a good balance of play-time and proximity to resources to support my lifestyle. It also allows me to explore my passions of climbing, skiing, and photography while studying French. It’s a good place to stimulate the mind on all fronts.

What is the TCF?

TCF – Test de connaissance du français is a French language test awarded by the French Ministry of Education:

  • TCF assesses a person’s level of French language for general purposes. It is intended for people who are not native French speakers and who, for professional, personal or academic reasons, wish to have their competency in French assessed and certified simply, reliably and quickly.
  • The TCF is a standard graded test designed by the CIEP, a language tester and member of ALTE, based on an extremely rigorous method that makes it a valid means of assessing language skills.
  • All candidates receive a certificate of results that grades them at one of six levels (from A1 to C2) on the competency scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Avec l’instauration de la République islamique débute le temps des “commissaires de la révolution” qui contrôlent tenues et comportements. Marjane qui doit porter le voile, se rêve désormais en révolutionnaire. Dans un contexte de plus en plus pénible, ses positions rebelles deviennent problématiques. Ses parents décident alors de l’envoyer en Autriche pour la protéger.
