Tenerife, the largest of the
seven Canary Islands, is located off the northwestern
coast of Africa. This amazing island with its
stunning natural features is a paradise, especially
for people interested in surfing, scuba diving
and mountain biking.
THE ISLAND IS DIVIDED by
a mountain range, which effectively creates two
different climates within a very short distance
of each other. The cooler, northern region is
a lush, tropical paradise of banana plantations
and palm trees. The south is hot and dry with
almost desert landscapes. At the heart of the
island lies its major landmark - the volcanic
crater of Mount Teide, which is Spain's tallest
peak and the third tallest volcano in the world.
Our school is situated in Puerto
de la Cruz on the northern side of Tenerife. It
is the second largest tourist city on the island
with a population of 27.000 and unlike too many
Spanish resorts, Puerto de la Cruz is no concrete
jungle! The old part, the core of the old colonial
town, is a network of tree-lined avenidas, narrow
winding calles, shady plazas and steps running
from one level to another. Many of the fine old
houses with their distinctive Canarian balconies
have survived.
PUERTO DE LA CRUZ IS THRIVING
with a whole host of facilities that contribute
to the region's busy air. Excellent restaurants,
which boast a combination of traditional Spanish
recipes with African and Latin American influences,
a variety of cafés, numerous local bars
and clubs that remain open until the small hours!
In the evening, the streets near the Plaza del
Charco and the promenade are always bustling with
people.
INSTED's partner school
is located in the Edificio Bélgica, a traditional
Canaries building that is a ten minute walk from
City Hall, a five minute walk from the Martiánez
Beach and just two minutes from the famous Lagos
Martiánez. Due to its magnificent location
you always only minutes away from beautiful beaches
and recreational opportunities. The school has
seven well-lit classrooms, a teachers' room, a
patio, an office, multimedia classrooms, and a
recreation area with television, hi-fi, library
and videos.
