Chamonix is situated in the
heart of the French Alps on the border of France,
Switzerland and Italy. Surrounded by high peaks
and vast glaciers, this picturesque town lies
in a valley as the doorstep to the highest mountain
in Europe - Mont-Blanc.
For more
than two hundred years Chamonix has attracted
people from all over the world. It all started
in 1786 when the alpinists Jean-Jaques Paccard
and Joseph Balmat conquered the summit of Mont-Blanc.
Today Chamonix has become the capital of skiing
and alpinism - the centre for a whole world of
high altitude adventures whilst retaining its
history in the old buildings and town centre as
well as in the statues and museums.
The lively streets of Chamonix are a colourful
mix of sport shops, guide offices, restaurants,
bars and cafés. There is also a Saturday
outdoor market, a multiplex cinema, a library,
and a large sports centre with a pool, gym and
indoor climbing.
THE LOCAL POPULATION of
Chamonix numbers around 10000 inhabitants. This
number increases during the summer and winter
seasons to include tourists, backpackers, tour
operators, local families, students, film crews,
pro riders, experienced climbers and alpinists.
It is this vibrant mix of people and encounters
that makes the charm of Chamonix irresistible.
FRENCH CUISINE AND NIGHTLIFE
Chamonix is situated in the Haute Savoie region,
famous for its cuisine based on the delicious
Reblochon and Tomme cheeses produced by the local
farmers. All the time you find yourself surrounded
by the massive scenery of more than four thousand
meter high peaks!
Later in the evening, the bars and clubs invite
you to investigate the nightlife. Bands and DJs
please the crowds with music from reggae to jazz
on most nights of the week. Feel free to practice
your French with the local mountain guides while
drinking a Pastis at the old Bistro de Sport!
Chamonix has something
to offer everyone. You can choose the calm mountain
lifestyle complete with hiking tours. If you prefer,
the town also offers city life, snow parks and
competitions. Chamonix will initiate and welcome
the beginner but will also act as a true test
for the extreme. It is a great place for a classic
ski season and also a perfect starting point from
which to explore Europe.
