Biarritz is the birthplace of
European surfing. With its amazing beaches and
famous waves it has attracted surfers from all
over the world since the 1950's. The picturesque
town is located in the South-Western corner of
France - just across the border from Spain.
The surroundings of the town
are spectacular. Inland you find the mountain
range Les Pyrenées- ideal for hiking
and discovering breathtaking views. On the other
side of Biarritz you find the Atlantic coast and
its natural protected environment with long sandy
beaches offering a wide range of water sport activities
all year round.
BIARRITZ BECAME FAMOUS in
the 19th century when French, British and Russian
aristocracy started spending their summers here.
An impressive palace (which is now the world class
Hotel du Palais) was built on the beach to accommodate
kings, queens and nobility. However, the days
of being reserved for high society are long gone
and today Biarritz is an affordable vibrant and
cosmopolitan town with magnificent beaches. Now
the town has 30 000 inhabitants in winter and
120 000 in summer.
The Atlantic ocean influences
the climate, creating mild and temperate weather
all year round. Winters record the highest temperatures
in France and summers are warm with cool sea breezes.
THE TOWN HAS A GOOD and
varied selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
You may choose to eat in one of the many brasseries,
in a casual bistrot or in an upmarket restaurant
with Guide Michelin stars, which all offer a variety
of good local cuisine and classic French fare.
A good way to start a night out in Biarritz is
at Port des Pécheurs, an ideal spot
for people-watching, with its sport fishers, restaurants,
and fascinating crowds. Later you might end up
at Le Caveau, one of the nightclubs in
Biarritz, or try the hip Le Copa Cobana
for Latin salsa along with every other kind of
dance music.
INSTED'S PARTNER SCHOOL is
located close to Biarritz town center (20 mins
by foot, 10 mins by bike) in a modern and spacious
building. The school has 15 bright, air conditioned
classrooms for groups of 2 to 12 participants.
An internet and self study room is at the students
disposal throughout class hours.
